William Cooke, mentioned as a landowner near Abraham Cooke in 1719 was probably his eldest son. As a resident of Hanover Co, William patented 430 acres in Goochland Co, VA, on Great Guinea Creek March 24. 1740. This area became Cumberland Co in 1744. William's mother, Martha Clayton, sometimes spelled Claeton, gave her name to his son Clayton. This name appears for generations afterwards, including Clayton Cook, the son of Major John Cook and Margaret Shackelford Cook. William died at St. Martins Parish, Hanover Co, VA. We do not know his wife's name.
