This John Hawkins, our direct ancestor, is the progenitor of the Hawkins line of seafarers who won great acclaim as naval heroes in Great Britain. He married his cousin Joan Amados, who was daughter of William Amados and Margaret Hawkins. He held land in Plymouth, England, long before 1485 when his son William was born. An officer in the Navy of Henry VIII, William became one of the most prominent sea captains in western England, highly favored by the King. He was a man of great wealth and property. His son, Sir Admiral John Hawkins, was patriarch of the "Sea Dogs" under Queen Elizabeth and created for his Queen the most powerful Navy in the world. His cousin, Sir Francis Drake, was at his side in this endeavor.
