The Drake family was established in Crowndale, Devon, a century or more before Sir Francis Drake's birth. The family had a 40 year lease on lands and tenements, paying about 4 pounds rent annually. The loamy soil at Crowndale was fertile enough to make the Drake family prosperous, and with prosperity came the desire to keep the land in the family. Ultimately, it was passed on to John Drake, grandfather of Sir Frances Drake and his brothers. In 1543, John and Margery Hawkins Drake had personal holdings valued at 20 pounds sterling. The Drakes were well off, much more so than most of their neighbors. We have a good description of their farm.
