Here are the early Madison County,Alabama, settlers. They came from Hawkins Co, TN, which was originally part of North Carolina. First, Isaac Criner, Joseph Criner, and their cousin Stephen McBroom. After the Criners, a colony headed by Samuel Davis came to this territory a year before John Hunt came, and built his house on the foundation Samuel Davis had laid. Then came the Walkers and Campbells to settle in Hickory Flat, and about the same time the Browns, Rices, Matthews and McCains came and settled on the Fork of Flint River. McCain settled the McFarland place, and Isaac Criner married his daughter Nancy on November 23, 1815. Their first child, Lucinda, was born in 1816.
Robert and his wife Jane had ten children: Elizabeth, Moses, Nancy, John, James, Jane, Keziah, William, Andrew, and Robert. The spelling of their last name McCain was a Scottish variant of McKean.
