"Mac" served in the Fourth Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Army of Northern Virginia which fought with great distinction at Manassas, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Second Manassas, Boonesboro, Antietam (Sharpsburg), and Gettysburg. After surviving Gettysburg, he attempted to slip through Yankee-held territory of Northern Alabama to see his little girl, Martha Sue, at his family plantation near New Market. He was killed by a sniper when almost within sight of home. We still have the touching letter he wrote to his little girl from "Cavalry Camp, near Alexandria, Tennessee," promising to come and see her if ever he got the chance. He is listed in the Alabama Hall of Heroes and buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery (Routts' Cemetery) at Meridianville.
