Hiram Okes (often spelled Oakes) left Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1829 with his parents for Madison Co, AL. He was two years old. In 1847-1848 as a 20-21 year old, he was a soldier in the Mexican-American War. On Feb. 1, 1854, 3 days before his 27th birthday he married Sarah Elizabeth Shackelford in Madison Co. In 1855, his daughter Mary was born; In 1858, his daughter Martha was born. In the 1860 census he was at home in Alabama with his family. Evidently, when the Civil War began, he moved his wife and daughters to Lincoln Co,TN where his wife's family lived. This county adjoined Madison Co, AL on the north. In November, 1861, he enlisted with other Lincoln County men in Company A as part of the 41st Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. This regiment began with 575 men engaged, but very few were left by the time of the surrender in April, 1865. He fought against Sherman at the Battles of Kennesaw Mountain, Chattahoochee River, the siege of Atlanta, and the battles at Jonesboro. His only son was conceived in the autumn of 1864, when the 41st was with Gen. John B. Hood in his reckless invasion of Tennessee. Hiram may have been killed in the Battle of Franklin, TN, where Hood's army was virtually destroyed on November 30, 1864. We know that Hiram died of a gunshot wound to the head months before his son was born in June,1865 in McMinnville,TN. We do not know why Sarah Elizabeth was there, some distance from her Lincoln Co family.
