A beloved Presbyterian minister, George Madison C. Okes never knew his father. Hiram Okes, a Confederate soldier, was killed in the last months of the Civil War. His mother married again, but died at age 35. At the age of 7, he went to his father's parents, Jesse and Mary Okes. Jesse died when he was 10, and Mary when he was 16. He had two older sisters, one residing in Lincoln Co, Tennessee. At age 17 he was living near Elkton, TN, (Giles Co). After he and Sue Criner were married at her family's plantation in Alabama when he was 21 years old, he completed studies at the Cumberland Presbyterian Seminary in Lebanon, Tennessee, then they moved to Missouri where he pastored Cumberland Presbyterian churches in Salt River Presbytery. Their permanent home was at Frankford, MO. We are not sure what the C. stood for in his name, but friends in the South called him "Connie." His children were: Gertrude, who died of typhoid fever at age 10; Almyra Roberta; Lucille and Vivian, who both died in infancy; Georgia Maurine; and Guy Chalmer Okes.
